Feeling those butterflies in your stomach before a performance?

Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

Stage fright is something many dancers experience, especially when starting out.

But guess what? You can overcome it!

Here’s a friendly guide to help you conquer your fears and shine on stage. Let’s get started!

The more familiar you are with your routine, the more confident you’ll feel.

Repetition builds muscle memory, so when you’re on stage, your body knows what to do even if your mind is a bit jittery.

3 Ways To Practice Your Moves

  • Repetition: Practice your dance routine until you can do it in your sleep. Repetition builds confidence and muscle memory.
  • Mirror Practice: Practice in front of a mirror to see your movements and make necessary adjustments.
  • Simulated Performances: Try practicing in front of friends or family to simulate the feeling of performing in front of an audience.

Practice makes perfect—or at least makes you less likely to trip over your own feet!

Visualization is a powerful tool. By picturing yourself performing successfully, you train your mind to focus on positive outcomes rather than fears.

How to Do It:

  • Daily Visualization: Spend a few minutes each day visualizing yourself on stage, nailing every move, and enjoying the applause. Imagine every detail—the lights, the music, the audience’s smiles.
  • Mental Rehearsal: Mentally rehearse your routine step-by-step. This helps reinforce your muscle memory and boosts your confidence.

Deep breathing can calm your nerves and help you stay focused.

It reduces anxiety by lowering your heart rate and increasing oxygen flow to your brain.

How to Do It:

  • Pre-Performance Routine: Before going on stage, take a few deep breaths in through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and then exhale slowly through your mouth. Repeat until you feel more relaxed.
  • Breathing Patterns: Practice different breathing patterns to find what works best for you, such as 4-7-8 breathing (inhale for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds, exhale for 8 seconds).

Breathe in confidence, breathe out fear—like you’re blowing out birthday candles!

Your mind believes what you tell it. Positive self-talk can boost your confidence and reduce negative thoughts.

Replace thoughts like “I’m going to mess up” with “I’ve got this!” or “I’m ready to shine!” Create a list of positive affirmations and repeat them to yourself daily.

Remind yourself of all the hard work you’ve put in and how capable you are. Reflect on past successes to boost your confidence.

Be your own cheerleader—give yourself a mental pep talk before stepping on stage!

Feeling nervous means you care about what you’re doing, and that’s a good thing! Embracing your nerves can transform them into energy and excitement.

Acknowledge your nerves instead of fighting them. Tell yourself it’s okay to feel this way and that even professional dancers get nervous.
